The role of deformation and other quantities in an equation for enstrophy as applied to atmospheric blocking

چکیده
In this note, equations for enstrophy and enstrophy advection are derived in terms of well-known quantities, assuming horizontal frictionless flow on a beta-plane. Specifically, enstrophy can be written in terms of the geopotential (or pressure), relative vorticity, zonal wind, and resultant deformation. Enstrophy advection is shown to be related to the time evolution of deformation and ageostrophic relative vorticity. Based on previous research, these terms may contribute to instability associated with atmospheric blocking development and decay. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mitigation of Tropospheric Delay on InSAR Interseismic Displacements
One of the major challenges of Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique is the existence of tropospheric effect on the results. The tropospheric effect is due to the changes of atmospheric parameters including temperature, pressure, and humidity between the master and slave images. In this research, two different methods based on spatial-temporal filters and calculation of pha...
متن کاملMODELING THE HOT DEFORMATION FLOW CURVES OF API X65 PIPELINE STEEL USING THE POWER LAW EQUATION
Till now, different constitutive models have been applied to model the hot deformation flow curves of different materials. In this research, the hot deformation flow stress of API X65 pipeline steel was modeled using the power law equation with strain dependent constants. The results was compared with the results of the other previously examined constitutive equations including the Arrhenius eq...
متن کاملThe omega blocking condition and extreme rainfall in Northwestern Iran during 25 - 28 October 2008
Heavy precipitation plays a significant role in arid and semi-arid regions of Iran. In order to understand the effect of blocking high system on rainfalls in northwest Iran during 25 - 28 October 2008, meteorological conditions including pressure, wind fields and temperature at multiple levels of the atmosphere were analyzed. Sea level pressure, the 1000-500 hPa thickness, perceptible water, re...
متن کاملStudy of leaky dielectric droplet behavior under an electric field: effect of viscosity and electric conductivity ratios
In this research, hydrodynamic behavior of a leaky dielectric droplet under an electric field is simulated. The level set method is used for interface tracking and the ghost fluid method is used for modeling discontinuous quantities at interface. Using Taylor’s leaky dielectric model, electric field and electric force at the interface is calculated. Simulation results show the droplet deformati...
متن کاملUsing enstrophy advection as a diagnostic to identify blockingregime transition
This article proposes a method to identify blocking onset and decay by means of two stability indicators: enstrophy advection and its integral. The key to this technique is the use of local Lyapunov exponents for the barotropic vorticity equation, which can be approximated by the integral of enstrophy (IRE) over a fixed, finite region. The IRE can then be viewed as a measure of stability. Howev...
